Some days I dream about boarding a flight to a beach in Greece. Other days I’m just happy if nobody spills a yogurt pouch on the rug. (Again.)
While big adventures aren’t always in the cards, because, life… I’ve found that a little imagination goes a long way. You don’t need a boarding pass to experience a tiny sense of freedom, wonder, or calm. Sometimes, the best kind of escape happens in your own backyard… or kitchen… or couch corner.
So here are five of my favorite ways to “travel” without ever leaving home. Dress code casual, highly encouraged.
1. Themed Dinners (Stretchy waistbands a must)
One night we’re having tacos under twinkle lights and pretending we’re beachside in Tulum. The next, we’re in Italy with a bowl of pasta and a Spotify playlist that says “nonna approved.”
Turning an ordinary meal into a themed experience is one of the simplest ways to shift the mood at home. Light a candle, cue up the matching music, and let the food do the transporting.
Easy ideas:
- Mexico night: street tacos, lime agua fresca, and a Mexican cumbia playlist
- Italy night: spaghetti, fresh bread, and Italian jazz
- Japan night: DIY sushi rolls and Studio Ghibli playing in the background
- Bonus: If you add a blanket on the floor and call it a picnic, your kids will think you’re a genius.
2. Travel Through Books (until someone yells “MOM!”)
Books have always been my favorite way to escape. Give me a rainy evening and a good story set in a far-off place, and I’m gone (well, until someone needs help finding a missing sock).
Some of my favorite “destination reads”:
- The Catch Me If You Can – an inspiring and fascinating journey
- The Maui Effect – excitement, adventure, and romance
- Beautiful Ruins – Italy, drama, and stunning visuals
- Midnight Library – not travel, but a deep inner journey for the soul
- Hunt, Gather, Parent – more about culture than travel, but my FAV parenting book
You could even make this a family thing. Pick a travel-themed book to read together with the kids and pair it with snacks or crafts that match the setting.
3. Curate a “Wanderlust Corner” (aka no laundry allowed)
Designate one small spot in your home that’s just for you and just for dreaming.
Mine has a comfy chair, tropical plants, and usually a candle that smells like the ocean (or what I imagine the ocean would smell like if it were bottled by Anthropologie).
It’s not about perfection. It’s about creating a space that feels like a pause button. A reminder that you’re allowed to rest, imagine, and just be.
Rotate the vibe depending on your mood. One week: coastal cottage. The next: woodland cabin. And don’t worry if it starts out as a shelf or a windowsill. Magic fits in small spaces.
4. Global Movie Nights (Subtitles = instant culture points)
This is our new favorite weekend ritual. Everyone grabs a blanket, I grab the snacks, and we pick a movie set in a faraway place.
We’ve watched Japanese animations, French countryside dramas (okay, that one was just me), and travel documentaries that made me want to Google plane tickets mid-movie.
Ideas to get started:
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – inspiring and visually stunning
- Eat, Pray, Love – good as a movie, great as a book option
- Under the Tuscan Sun – pure wanderlust
- The Hundred-Foot Journey – food and France and all the feels
- Expedition Happiness – travel doc with a dog and a van, yes please
5. Go on a Staycation Adventure (no packing required)
Sometimes the best “travel” is just seeing the familiar with new eyes. We’ve had sunrise breakfasts on the porch, mapped out dream vacations on paper with the kids, and turned our backyard into a beach club (aka a kiddie pool + Spotify + popsicles).
Try these:
- Set up a backyard “cafe” breakfast
- Go on a neighborhood photo walk and pretend you’re a tourist
- Build a tent indoors and have a movie marathon
- Create a vision board of dream destinations and hang it in your kitchen
- Map out a pretend “trip” and cook or craft your way through it
You don’t have to go far to feel free. You just need to give yourself permission to play.
Closing Thoughts:
I haven’t packed a suitcase in a while, but I’ve explored new flavors, wandered through stories, and danced with my kids like we were in a music video on a cobblestone street.
And maybe, just maybe.. that’s the kind of travel I needed most. ✨
